Users Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
