Tragic Update on Cargo Plane Crash: Fatalities Rises to 13

The number of fatalities resulting from the transport jet that burst into flames and went down has climbed to 13, as confirmed by official announcements.

Mayor's Statement

Traveling to the Union’s candlelight gathering, I received word of a 13th person that passed away as a result of the plane accident,” wrote the local official in a social media post. “My heart are with the loved ones, friends and colleagues of all who were taken in this week’s disaster. We will get through this as one.”

Casualties Confirmed

A release from UPS listed the officers aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and Relief Captain Dana Diamond.

“Our hearts are extended to each employee who has been impacted and all in our community region – assisting you and ensuring you obtain the attention and aid you need is our focus,” the company’s statement stated.

Investigation Updates

Government investigators announced that the UPS cargo plane’s port side wing ignited and an engine detached shortly after liftoff from the aviation hub, causing the aircraft to plummet and erupt into a fireball.

The NTSB stated it is probing the aircraft’s maintenance history, that was in the state for maintenance a period before the incident.

Aircraft records showed the aircraft was on the runway in the Texas city from early September to mid-October.

“We are aware that this jet was there in the facility,” remarked an NTSB member on later, not giving a specific date range. “We will review each aspect of maintenance that was done, including the repair period, straight to the day of the trip.”

Recovery of Key Components

The audio device and data recorder were found, and the power plant was found on the airfield.

The recorders – referred to as black boxes – were designed to survive crash impacts and severe fire from fires, and they looked to be undamaged when located within the crash debris. Officials will reviewing data from the recorders.

Jet’s final flight details displayed an altitude of that level and a speed of 210 mph ahead of the crash.

Maintenance History

Based on Federal Aviation Administration records from 18 September, a crack on a part in the center wing fuel tank required fixes.

The company ST Engineering, which said it offers aircraft servicing for UPS’s MD-11 and runs a repair facility in San Antonio, refused to comment, but expressed it would cooperate fully when relevant authorities contacted it.

Activities Resume

In the meantime, the facility operations resumed Wednesday night with its express or nighttime operation, representative Jim Mayer confirmed. All three landing strips at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also reopened.

The UPS package handling facility in Louisville is the organization’s most significant. The hub employs in excess of a large number of individuals in the region, manages three hundred aircraft daily and sorts more than four hundred thousand items each hour.

Local Response

A gathering was organized on the late afternoon of 6 November by the local worker’s group, which acts for employees at the Louisville airport, the company’s biggest freight center.

Teamsters Local 89, which represents staff, commenced the vigil with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the rough time of the incident two days earlier.

“This incident was so abrupt, so surprising,” the official spoke to the crowd of two hundred. “No one had a moment to bid farewell to any one of those who we have mourned.”
