How a US Special Forces Vet Assisted the Venezuelan Opposition Leader Flee Venezuela
The audacious escape of political leader María Corina Machado involved a lengthy, frightening and soaking sea crossing in the dead of night, according to the US veteran who says he led the operation.
The Perilous Nighttime Crossing
The rescue organizer, who leads a nonprofit rescue organisation, outlined the mission in a newly published media appearance. “It was dangerous. It was scary,” stated Stern, a US special forces veteran, describing dark and choppy conditions that simultaneously offered ideal concealment for the escape.
“The ocean was perfect for our purposes, but not water you'd choose to sail on ... the higher the waves, the harder it is for radar to see,” Stern said.
He described meeting Machado out at sea after she departed from Venezuela, where she had been in hiding since August 2024 due to fear of persecution by the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
The Detailed Extraction
Machado embarked on his boat for a 13- to 14-hour trip to an secret location to catch a plane, as part of planned just days before. The operation occurred at midnight – very little moon, some cloud coverage, extremely low visibility, vessels running dark. All of us were pretty wet. My crew and I were drenched. She was also chilled and wet. She endured a grueling passage,” Stern noted.
Regarding her state, he commented, She was elated. She was very excited. She was very tired,” and noted about twenty-four people were directly involved within his team.
Confirmation and Concealment
A representative for Machado verified that Stern’s company was responsible for the operation, which began on Tuesday. This report follows earlier stories that Machado used a wig and costume to flee her hideout in a suburb of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.
Stern did not divulge details about the ground segment, citing his organization's ongoing operations in the region.
Funding and US Role
He stated publicly the mission was financed by “several benefactors” – with no US government figures involved. Official US funds were not used, at least not that I know of,” Stern asserted.
He clarified, though, that his group did coordinate informally with the US military regarding positioning and plans, primarily to prevent being targeted by airstrikes.
Future Plans and Admiration
The opposition leader stated she had American backing to depart Venezuela. She has announced plans to go back, though the specifics remain uncertain how or when.
Stern said his group would play no part in that operation, as it focuses exclusively on extracting individuals from countries, not in. “She must decide that for herself. But I think she should not go back. Yet she is determined. She is a genuine inspiration,” he said.
