An Story of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book lodging upon arrival, but once I got there, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could bed down in the terminal – only to discover that airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on public transport and began walking in the direction of the casino, believing I could pass the evening somewhere operating through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing an interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more people like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared out of place because a woman saw me wandering around the city center and asked if everything was alright. I explained my predicament and right away she said I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered some food: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I had access to a hot shower and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.
In retrospect, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took being a woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger crash at her place. At that time I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – yet very grateful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of kindness. I hope karma has returned her good deed tenfold. The world needs more people who show such kindness.
