A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
